This work carried out for the waste storage facility of the integrated iron and steel plant on the Black Sea coast involved the supply and installation of a complete containment package, not just geomembrane deployment. GCL (bentonite-based geosynthetic clay liner), geocomposite drainage layer and HDPE geomembrane were deployed in a compatible sequence as parts of a multi-layered liner system. Considering the chemical profile of the industrial waste, material selection and layer geometry were detailed specifically for the project.

Turkey's Western Black Sea climate was the main parameter limiting the deployment window; wind and moisture required daily revisions in panel unfolding direction and welding temperature settings. To keep moisture absorption under control during GCL deployment, rows were strictly covered with geomembrane at the end of the shift. The geocomposite drainage layer acted as a bridge between the lower liner and the upper protection geotextile, contributing to the dissipation of hydraulic load.

This collaboration carried out with one of Turkey's established steel producers demonstrated a practical example of how geosynthetic composite systems can be integrated into the domestic industry on the industrial waste storage side.
