About the Project

Executed on the northwestern coast of the Sahara desert, in a location where the average annual rainfall remains below 100 mm, but wind-driven saline aerosols cause rapid corrosion on metal surfaces, the primary engineering challenge was preserving the long-term UV and thermal cycling resistance of the containment system. Sharp-edged limestone fragments identified on the subgrade during the preparation of the process and storage ponds required a reassessment of the mass per unit area selection of the protection geotextile laid beneath the geomembrane.

The panel layout plan of the HDPE geomembrane was designed to accommodate thermal expansion under conditions where the diurnal temperature variation exceeded 30°C; welding operations were largely scheduled for early mornings and after sunset. Pressure testing between double-track hot wedge welds and the vacuum box method on extrusion repair seams were applied, with quality records of every seam maintained digitally throughout the project.

Divided into stages to maintain operational continuity over a field presence exceeding two years, the installation was delivered taking into consideration the chemical resistance requirements for the containment of low-pH solutions originating from the copper flotation process.
