Due to its underground mining structure and flotation concentrate production, Efemçukuru requires a different engineering approach in waste storage facility design compared to conventional open-pit mines. In basins where fine-grained wastes with high water content are stored, the long-term containment performance of the bottom liner system is based on a composite barrier formed by bentonite-based GCL and HDPE geomembrane together. Throughout the cooperation maintained with Tüprag since 2010, the installations have been shaped around anchor solutions at slope-base transitions of this composite system, deployment discipline on the compacted clay layer, and adaptation of low-temperature welding parameters to the field.

The rugged terrain in the inner western part of Izmir significantly affected panel cutting and placement logistics. To mitigate the risk of sliding on inclined surfaces, textured sheets were used, and geocomposite drainage layers and leachate collection lines were integrated at the base-slope junctions. All test bundles for extrusion and hot wedge welds, along with pressure and vacuum tests, were logged into the field quality records.

The phased raise plan of the facility necessitated the integration of new geomembrane belts into the existing system at each crest raise from the outset. To maintain the deployment and welding schedule even during rainy transitional seasons, field management was carried out using a shift-based production method planned according to weather windows.
