The waste storage pond in Lapseki is positioned as a critical structure connected to the heap leach system in terms of solution management. Wind load and surface evaporation in the coastal regions of Çanakkale create a design framework where the containment system requires long-term stability not only at the base, but also on the slopes and upper slope areas. The pond liner system was therefore specifically planned in terms of anchor trenches, panel overlap direction, and crest safety bands.
In the geomembrane installations performed, HDPE liner was selected in a double-sided textured configuration to prioritize slope stability. While the dual-track testing channel of wedge welding was verified with pressure tests at each panel joint, detail fabrication was executed via extrusion welding at geometrically complex corners and inlet-outlet points. Additional sheet patches were planned for mechanical protection at solution inlet points and slope crests.
Variable weather conditions specific to the Marmara transition zone required the welding temperature and speed to be revised according to the time of day. The site manufacturing quality control plan is transferred to the employer's engineering team along with non-destructive weld tests, destructive sample results, and daily production records, preparing the pond for the pre-commissioning certification process.
