When a two-phase expansion of a waste storage facility resting on a narrow valley floor in the mountainous interior of the Eastern Black Sea region is in question, the weld continuity standard of the joint lines at phase transitions determines the performance of the entire project. The boundary panels of the first-phase liner system were joined with specially prepared transition details within the scope of the second phase; double-track welding and air pressure testing were made mandatory at these points.

HDPE geomembrane deployment under high-altitude site conditions was calibrated on a shift basis due to the effect of day-night temperature differences on welding parameters, and wedge welders were verified with trial seams at the start of each shift. Liner thickness and protection layer selection were kept conservative against the acid drainage risk specific to copper mining.

Managing the supply and installation of Phase 1 and Phase 2 under a single contractor umbrella provided operational convenience to the employer in terms of material batch number traceability and the integrity of closing documentation.
