Liner selection in agricultural water storage structures is the critical decision determining the long-term performance of the project. In this project, a bentonite-based composite liner (GCL — Geosynthetic Clay Liner) was preferred instead of traditional HDPE; the self-healing structure of bentonite upon contact with water provides a natural tolerance against small punctures and perforations, reducing the maintenance burden in agricultural water infrastructure.
In an agricultural basin with a clayey-silty soil structure in the Marmara region, after subgrade preparation for the pond base and slopes, GCL rolls were deployed in compliance with specification overlaps. Extra bentonite powder supplementation was applied at overlap zones, and peripheral closure was completed with anchor trenches. The thickness of the protective soil placed on top was positioned in a controlled manner, taking the hydration time into account.
On-site, executed in coordination with the technical guidance of the Spain-based manufacturer, parameters such as the product's deployment tolerances and weather conditions (closure before rain) were strictly monitored; post-delivery, the pond was successfully integrated into the annual agricultural irrigation cycle.
